Thong Krut is a very small village along one of the side road on the South Western coast of Koh Samui. The local life is mostly focused on the fishing and transportation of villagers and tourists to the nearby Southern island of Koh Taen. It is the departure point for ships to Koh Tan and other small islands off Samui's south coast, so a few restaurants and tour companies have emerged around the dock serving the needs of those making a trip.
Moving to the inner Thong Krut village, there are only a few restaurants and mini mart that villagers from Laem Sor Village and sometimes Baan Taling Ngam use as well. The restaurants are run by local families and serve Thai food with an emphasis on fish, or spicy meats, so be sure to take some time to adapt to local tastes.
The beach of Thong Krut is not very attractive for swimmers, and is free of the intrusion of water sports. The water resembles a mudflat so it's better to go further north and east for the wonderful beaches and sands.
The village is worth stopping by with a camera to capture the brightly colored fishing boats, Kor Lae, and the authentic culture of a Muslim fishing neighborhood. You can also visit the village to view the spectacular scenery across to Tan and Matsum Islands. The tour companies concentrated within Thong Krut offer boat trips to the islands and fishing trips. Not just a jumping off point to islands offshore south of Samui, Thong Krut is also the best area for fishing expeditions.
Villa renters are understandably attracted to the slow pace of life here, in refreshing contrast to much of the rest of the island. You get a real feel of being in not just a different country, but a different time, a complete escape that leaves holiday makers with the feeling of truly having been somewhere.
