Divided into 9 provinces, the entire land mass of the island is a mere 65,000 square kilometres. This means that if you have the time, you can complete a tour of the entire country in a 3 weeks period. However, let’s assume for the sake of conversation that you do not have this luxury.

Your stay in Sri Lanka will typically range from between 3 nights to 21 nights. To simplify your decision process we will segment the places of interest in Sri Lanka into the following categories:

Places of Cultural and Religious Significance

Wildlife Sanctuaries and Safari Destinations

Wellness/Meditations retreats

Whale and Dolphin Watching locations

Beaches for relaxation

Beaches for Surfing

Whale watching in Mirissa is a lifetime experience

Your decision as to how long you would like to stay will depend on which of these areas you would like to enjoy on your tour. It’s important to bear in mind that due to the size of the country itself, it is, in fact, possible to cover all these areas in one go. However, you will have to compromise relaxation and the ability to fully enjoy your trip if you choose this express method. Another constraint might be the sort of budget you are dealing with. For example, if you are looking for a beach stay on a limited budget, you have the option of spending a few nights at a 3 or 4-star hotel. Alternatively, you may choose to spend a few weeks at a beachside homestay with the very same budget. With the boom in tourism experienced in the country over the past few years, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where you would like to stay.

Outdoor area at a beautiful beach house in Sri Lanka

It is therefore important that you plan out your tour of the country well in advance. With the ease of mobility and the proximity of locations, you have plenty of options at your disposal. This can be a blessing for you if you are prepared and a nightmare if you aren’t. There are many standard tours that have been tried and tested to choose from. However, you can also deviate from these and plan your own tour.

The optimum length of time to stay depending on your group

A typical 3 night/4 day tour in Sri Lanka will definitely include a visit of the Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy) Though you can spend days on end exploring the ruins of the ancient kingdoms or marvelling over the mind-boggling technology and architecture of Sigiriya, a reasonable tour of the area will take 2 nights/3 Days. This will give you enough time to depart from the airport, arrive in the cultural triangle and complete the tour of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. Afterwards, you can depart via Kandy to Negombo to squeeze in a night at the beach before heading to the airport. En route to Negombo, you will have the chance to visit Sri Lanka’s most valuable possession: the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

Part of the ruins of the palace & fortress of Sigiriya

Afterwards, you can even drop by at the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala before heading for your dose of Vitamin Sea. This would be a typical 3-night tour of Sri Lanka combining cultural, wildlife and a beach stay. There are of course other variations of this time frame. If your primary focus is on the beach stay, three nights will allow you to explore the entire offerings of the south coast of Sri Lanka. You can, for example, start your tour in Galle. This will give you time to explore the magnificent Galle Fort and its surrounding establishments. From there on you can visit Mirissa to go whale watching and on the same day visit the Sea turtle conservation projects. As a final hurrah, you can set off on river safari on the sprawling branches of the Madu River. The river is an economic system of its own with tiny islands dedicated to groceries, temples and even clinics strewn along the way.

If you, however, have more time on your hand you can make your tour into a 5 night or even 7-night trip. This frees up a lot of time for you and allows you to enjoy the vast intricacies of these cultural sites. You can now dedicate 3 nights to exploring the cultural triangle and even fit in a safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjMzYl7guSb/?taken-by=srilanka

The general goldilocks zone for your stay in Sri Lanka is anywhere between 8 – 14 nights. This allows you to cover most of the country without comprising on rest and relaxation. Your tour will likely be divided into four nights in the cultural triangle, two nights in the hill country, two nights exploring a wildlife reserve of your choice and the remainder spent enjoying some vitamin sea.

This has been shown to be the most popular choice for travellers between 2009 and 2015. It also encompasses more types of travel groups as it is suitable for couples, honeymooners, families and even large groups.

The optimum length of time to stay depending on your type of holiday

Wildlife photographers love to capture photos like this one taken at Yala National Park

If you are travelling to Sri Lanka for a specific reason, even then it would be useful to plan in advance. You may, for example, be a wildlife photographer interested in Sri Lanka’s amazing biodiversity. If you are chasing the elusive Sri Lanka leopard then Yala is the location for you. Photographers spend weeks on end chasing this magnificent beast, and they are seldom left disappointed. If you are more interested in Elephants, you have a wider selection to choose from. You may choose from the elephant gatherings in Minneriya to the wilder, more sheepish elephant bulls of Udawalawe. If you like to truly study these magnificent giants, you should visit the Pinnawala elephant orphanage and its surrounding elephant conservations establishments.

If you are a fan of small birds or endemic insects, you might be more interested in the vast Sinharaja rainforest. If aquatic creatures are your area of interest, you can soak in the magnificence of the majestic blue whale in Mirissa and Trincomalee. The pod of whales found in Trincomalee is the largest in the world. You are only limited by your imagination. You may even choose to experience all this wildlife during your stay, which again would be extremely plausible.

There are also many who travel to Sri Lanka purely to enjoy the beaches. All they require is the soft warm sand beneath their feet, a cold beer in their hand and the gentle cascading of greens and blues stretching into the horizon. If this is your idea of an ideal holiday, then you could not be in a better place. Starting quite literally from the moment you land in Sri Lanka, you have a plethora of options. Located just 5 minutes from the airport, Negombo is a favourite spot among British travellers. With several hotel options, exquisite seafood restaurants and numerous lively pubs, Negombo has become a hotbed for tourists.

As you move south along the coast, you will come across the calm beaches of Hikkaduwa. The seas in this area are rife with coral and unique aquatic plants and marine life. Move further along and you will come across Bentota, another tourist hotspot with a mesmerizing beach. Head into the east coast of the country and you will find the powder blue shores of Trincomalee and Pasikudah. The shallow waters of these areas allow you to swim for miles with your feet still able to touch the ocean floor. As a traveller, you can take your pick.

Just imagine visiting this gorgeous tropical beach

Overall the decision as to how many days you should spend in the country will rely purely on your preference. There is something for everyone in this country and this includes people who are in a rush and people who can afford to take their time. With wide internet and data coverage throughout the island and several transportation services and authorities at your disposal, things can seldom go wrong. Plan in advance, do your research and you will not be left disappointed. If you are in a risk-averse mood, refer to the tried and test tour packages on offer. If you are feeling adventurous, try putting your own tour together. Happy travels!

Sri Lanka is a relatively small country.
