ultimately inspiring

i’ve never believed in that old adage about falling in love at first site — but upon stepping foot in the Sea Heart House i must admit i was quite smitten. the house, serenely situated high atop a hill and deep inside of a verdant forest, affords discerning privacy whilst remaining a few steps away from everything that makes Sri Lanka culturally rich. standing on top of this unspoiled hillside i could feel my lungs thank me for every clean gulp of air. floating in the pool, watching the sun play hide and seek, i could feel my heart find a new rhythm. lounging on the couch watching Kogolla Lake endlessly change its hue, i felt my mind easing its grip on my soul. the bike rides up-and-down the village roads, squirreling through the forest, in-and-out of the rice patties, afforded me the most genuine local smiles i’ve witnessed this side of adulthood. the beautifully prepared meals, composed wholly from fruits, vegetables and fish found naturally a few meters away from the dinner table, finally satiated my hunger. at night, encompassed in the sounds of the forest, i slept like a babe in the woods. i do believe that i was in competition with my fearless four legged companions, as to who could be the most zen for the longest duration. i’d like to think i gave them a run for their money! for many visitors who venture to the Southern parts of Sri Lanka, oceanside dwelling is the default setting. however, i’d like to suggest that the road less traveled in this case, the one that will leave the dull roar behind, is headed up a hill, into a forest, and straight into your dreams.

Sea Heart House is straight out of the best of the glossy magazines (but without the prices).

Sea Heart House is straight out of the best of the glossy magazines (but without the prices). Everything about the house is beautifully designed and beautifully appointed and we felt very special to be staying there. The sheets and the towels were of top quality and my bed was set in the middle of the room which gave it a really special feel. The house and swimming pool are situated on the side of a small hill and so the views across Koggala Lake were superb: bring binoculars. All the staff were charming and delightful and always smiling and helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble and all meals were never less than delicious: beware of eating too much: we did!

What a wonderful place!

What a wonderful place this is, I can thoroughly recommend it as a perfect start to a Sri Lankan holiday. (We came by train from Colombo, but I think it only takes about 2.5 hours from the airport by car). It’s a fabulous place to chill out, eg in the infinity pool gazing out at Koggola Lake, becoming even more magical as the sun sets over the lake and the pool lights come on. I also loved getting up early and going for a walk - seeing and hearing some beautiful birds. The bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious, with great views. The staff very friendly and helpful (thank you Ranga – I loved your cooking!). If chilling out isn’t your thing then Galle is great to visit, there’s a fascinating tea plantation nearby and the beach isn’t far away.

What a stunning place !

I arrived feeling wretched following a nasty bout of flu in cold, dismal, dark London and the moment I got to Seaheart House my spirits lifted and I felt good as new again. In a matter of minutes I had dropped my bags in my lovely spacious room and was floating in that wonderful pool enjoying the glorious view. A little later we were served up the most delicious dinner by Ranga, the new cook (who speaks very good English and presents his excellent dishes with great flair!). After a night in a wonderfully comfortable bed, it was time for a quick turn in the gym before a delicious breakfast, then a little gentle yoga ! With the friendly helpful staff and great indoor/outdoor living, while it isn't easy to find, being a tad off the beaten track, it is such a lovely house to chill in that who wants to go anywhere else ?! -especially with a view like that ! But we did venture out: a lovely tour at the local tea plantation, dinner on the beach at Unawatuna and a visit to Galle... before with heavy hearts, the time came for us to leave.

Mrs

Fantastic property. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Food was wonderful. Swimming pool was amazing. Location was a little challenging - quite hard to find. There are four bedrooms and only three bathrooms (rather than the four which were advertised) so some of the party need to be prepared to share a bathroom. That being said - the property has been built to a very high standard and is in a beautiful setting. We loved our stay there and would definitely recommend!

Overview

Offering stunning lake views from each room, Sea Heart House is a luxury accommodation named after the magnificent and beautiful ancient vine 'Entada Gigas', which curls and winds its way through the trees at the entrance to the villa. Complete with a 14- meter infinity pool, a fitness centre and a tropical garden, this unique, architecturally designed home is an ideal retreat with a lovely atmosphere that affords discerning privacy whilst remaining a few steps away from the best of Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural attractions. A perfect fusion of exotic East and modern West, this environmentally-friendly home harvests rainwater and uses solar panels to heat water and contribute to electricity.

Sunela Jayewardene an award winning Sri Lankan architect was appointed as architect for this home which was built during 2013/2014. She has maximised and even fantasised with the location to create a romantic home with outstanding lake views from every room and a swimming pool which leaves you wondering where the pool ends and the lake begins.
The garden around the house has taken shape with the help of a Sri Lankan, Edwin Karunasena, a former gardener to one of Sri Lanka’s most colourful characters, Bevis Bawa. Further landscaping, including a natural jetty on the lake, has been completed by Rainforest Rescue.
